How to Make Successful and Lasting Changes
1. Set for yourself the final good goal you want to accomplish, whether something religious or worldly.
2. Simplify your goal into smaller goals and work on them one by one before moving to the next; work a step at a time.
3. Every sub-goal should be simple and small; this will not put much stress on you and thus motivate you to continue. The Prophet (pbuh) said, “The most beloved of deeds to Allah are those that are most consistent, even if it is small”. [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]
4. Identify what are the stressful issues that may cause you to fail, and work hard to eliminate them.
5. To avoid failure, do your best to make every sub-goal an enjoyable task. You are apt to fail when you force yourself to do something you don’t like.
6. Be patient; remember that it takes time to change yourself; it does not happen overnight.
